PB1A - Highway Billboards

Highway billboard are hard to miss. Going down I-95 or the Turnpike we pass dozens of billboards. All these billboards hold the same purpose but individually it projects its own message. Today I will be focussing on 3 specific billboards then analyzing there rhetorical features. The three billboards are a savemolives billboard, a Dunkin Donuts billboard and a Chick Fil A billboard.
                                                                  Billboard 1
                                                                  Billboard 2
                                                                  Billboard 3

When passing on highways looking at billboards most of the time the same conventions pop out at me.Personally i believe that the same conventions apply with each and every billboard. That is they are always found outdoors, the font is always huge, the billboards are always a couple feet high( about 60 feet ), there are clear and large images, a slogan or logo is always present and its informative.
The first billboard, Savemolives seems to be right in front of the woods. It’s not as high as I predicted( about 15 feet). It has a catchy slogan “ Buckle up, Arrive Alive “. The font is big, It has a large image to its right of a crashed car. A logo is present and its informative. This particular billboard tries to convey the message that having a seatbelt on can prevent an accident.
The second billboard, Dunkin Donuts is pretty high as I predicted. It’s outdoors on a highway. The font is big. There is a clear image of a waffle sandwich and coffee cup. There is a slogan “ It’s back and the line starts here “. A logo is present and it informs you that the waffle sandwich is now back at Dunkin Donuts!
The third billboard, Chick Fil A is mostly informative. It informs its audience that there is a Chick Fil A in the next 1 ½ miles exit 186. The billboard is as high as I predicted. It’s outdoors, The font presented is pretty big, there isn’t a clear image on the billboard. There is no slogan but a logo is present.
I noticed not every one of my predictions were correct for each billboard, my predictions varied by the type of billboard, I noticed that there are billboards that are straightforward like the Chick Fil A with nether a slogan or any image. I also noticed that a logo is almost always present on a billboard. Also,Billboards will always be high but maybe not as high as I predicted ( about 60 feet ).
Who is the audience of the billboards ? The audience are passing pedestrians and drivers. Some may see billboards as just big signs taking up space and others may see them as a helpful resource for advertisement. But when you take a closer look you realize that the purpose of these highway billboards are to send out a message about any and everything whether it’s about a job vacancy, the next exit, to promote a product, service,or event taking place. The tone of billboards vary. For example, The savemolives billboard has a grim/ direct tone while the Dunkin Donuts ad has a laid back tone, and the Chick Fil A billboard has a serious/ informative tone. The style of most billboards are both persuasive and informational. So what makes a billboard a billboard ? Well that’s easy it’s creativity, persuasion, imagery, slogans, logos and the way a billboard catches your eye makes a billboard a billboard.
